This garment has two new 'BritIndian' artworks on it; 'Raja Rani' and 'Junglee Jungle'. Kings and Queens of yesteryear mingle with ordinary everyday folk. The overall look and feel of it is is deliberately fragrant, delicate and botanical. When I use foliage in my compositions, the symbolism is that of cyclic and seasonal change. As I look out of my studio window right now, I see an icy frost covering my vegetable patches and lawn. It is a time for hibernation, for retreating, for resolution. Soon, the winter will give way to spring and summer, and it will be the time of growth and expansion. Similarly, British colonization in India happenned more than two centuries ago, and I see the multiculturalism in London today as a sort of reverse cyclical season manifesting as a direct consequence of that old period. We are all connected - through our histories, our trials and tribulations, our trauma, victories and mutual understanding. This is not a time for division - it is a time for coming together. The romance of the past, mingling with the promise of today is the sentiment I have tried to express in these two compositions. There is much to be optimistic for if we dissolve conditioned prejudices that have been planted in our heads, so let this new tangled garden do its wild thing....all we have to do is pull out the weeds and smell the roses!
