Throughout my life, I've seen the women in my family embody superhuman feats. Take my aunt, for example. Every morning at 3:30 am, she’d open her newsagent in Finsbury Park, bring in the newspapers, and still find time to prepare meals for the entire family. She'd be standing in the shop, in her saree with a heater next to her feet, chatting and selling to her customers simultaneously. Growing up in a fairly patriarchal Indian community, I observed that the women’s to-do list never ended. From sunrise to sunset, it was non-stop. Meanwhile, the men would get their well-deserved evening off, cracking open a beer and watching the telly. Even now, when I go to family dinners, it's the girls who are stuck with the washing up while the men lounge in the living room.

That’s why I created this painting. It’s my tribute to the unsung superwomen of everyday life. It portrays Goddess Amba (Durga) as a modern-day housewife—still a force of nature, but now in the kitchen. With her many arms juggling all those daily tasks, she’s a symbol of the multitasking prowess that defines so many women today. And just in case you missed it, there’s a tigress on the counter, showing that she’s not just a nurturer but a fierce protector too. This painting merges mythology with the domestic sphere, encouraging us to see divine energy in the everyday, and challenging outdated ideas about femininity. It’s a nod to all the strength, resilience, and complexity that women juggle daily—and a reminder to appreciate all the goddess-like qualities within modern womanhood.
