ART TRAYS by Ketna Patel
In Indian culture, we’re raised on the mantra “Atithi Devo Bhava” — guests are gods! So of course, a tray isn’t just a tray… it’s a conversation starter, a stage for chai, gossip, and grand ideas. My art trays take that ritual and remix it — turning the simple act of serving into a pop-art moment. Many collectors prop them up vertically on their console tables, showing them off like mini altars to everyday culture. It’s my way of sneaking art (and a bit of mischief) into the heart of your home — one serving at a time.
These trays are not mass produced, and cannot be compared to a tray in IKEA or even at a museum shop. These are limited edition collectibles; straight from the Artist's studio. There is no 'middle man'. Each tray is made in the U.K, and the Retail price is double the Production Price. The difference is a contribution to the Artist's artwork, and supports her costs to keep this enterprise alive. Made from scratchproof melamine, these robust trays measure 43 x 33 cm, and are ideal for everyday use.
In this artwork, the scene resembles a dynamic panel from an Indian comic, merging futuristic dystopia with the timeless clash of consciousness and choice. At the center stands a powerful robot, embodying artificial intelligence and offering an illusion of reassurance amidst existential questions.
Beside the robot are two figures, each clutching a jar of pills that represent different paths. One holds blue pills, symbolizing the comfort of conformity and societal conditioning. Opposing him is a figure with a yellow halo, holding red pills—a nod to “The Matrix,” signifying awakening and the pursuit of truth. Overseeing the scene are demi-gods, suggesting unseen forces that influence mortal and mechanical fates. This composition invites viewers to ponder the eternal struggle between conformity and enlightenment in a swiftly changing world.
