TELL A VISION (square)
Modern society often chooses the comfort of convenient lies over uncomfortable truths, embracing readymade indoctrination disguised as "fact." Everyday language hints at this manipulation, often unnoticed—television becomes "Tell a Vision," where "TV programs" quite literally program us, and "TV channels" act as conduits for delivering propaganda.
In Tell a Vision, Ketna Patel creates a surreal, Orwellian landscape that explores colonialism, media control, and surveillance. At its center stands a figure symbolizing the British East India Company, its head replaced by a black-and-white television screen—a stark symbol of how mass media dehumanizes and dominates. The monochrome screen contrasts sharply with vibrant indigenous figures and lush greenery, emphasizing India's resilience and enduring cultural heritage despite imperial exploitation. Above, an eagle with a CCTV camera for a head serves as a chilling emblem of constant surveillance and the erosion of personal privacy.
Through these juxtapositions, Patel critiques the forces—media, technology, colonialism—that threaten individuality and cultural identity, urging viewers to recognize the subtle yet powerful ways propaganda infiltrates our lives. Tell a Vision challenges us to seek autonomy, question conformity, and preserve the authenticity of our inner narratives against society’s controlling forces.
