In The Last Asian Supper, multi-disciplinary artist Ketna Patel reimagines Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper to critique contemporary culture in Asia, portraying prominent Asian figures having a junk food picnic at sunset. Figures like Mahathir Mohamad, Kim Jong-un, the Dalai Lama, and Imelda Marcos indulge in this “feast,” surrounded by litter and oblivious to the impending darkness—a metaphor for cultural decay and self-indulgence. Above them, Chairman Mao and Mahatma Gandhi represent contrasting Asian psyches. Iconic Asian architecture forms the backdrop, symbolizing the region’s heritage amidst chaos. Patel’s saturated colors and karaoke-style visuals emphasize the illusory, “maya” world, while drawing on Foucault’s concept of “Heterotopia”—spaces of otherness—to reflect on a civilization saturated with borrowed meanings and teetering on the edge of transformation.
